I just uploaded the beginnings of the book class to the svn repository.
Let me know if you find bugs and also what features are missing. As I said, it’s just a start!

I’m still getting the previous reported error ” :\smallcapsspacing undefined” while trying to compile sample-handout-tex. The .cls /.tex files seem to be the latest versions.
In the tufte-handout.cls file, comment out lines 115, and 123. Line 115 is:
\newif\ifpdf\pdffalse. Line 123 is\newif\ifxetex\xetexfalse. Then see if the sample-handout.tex file compiles okay.This is a known bug in that version of tufte-handout.cls. It’s been corrected in the svn version.
If this doesn’t correct the problem, please let me know and we can investigate it further.

Thanks! I did comment out lines 115 and 123 in the tufte-handout.cls file. With the .cls and .tex files in the user directory, the file compiled just fine.
Strangely, when I made the same change in the texlive TDS directory file. I got the same error again. [I’m using Mac OS X (10.5.2, TeXShop v2.20]
